Who Are We

We are the premier self-defensive martial arts school in the Upstate of South Carolina, serving Greenville, Anderson, and Pickens Counties.

What We Teach
The styles we teach are Shorindokai Karate, Kodokan Judo, and TFC Jujitsu. The main style, Shorindokai Karate, is a true mixed martial art that combines throws, joint locks, take downs, kicks, and hand techniques into an eclectic fighting system.  Shorindokai Karate was developed specifically for real life self-defense, and utilizes modified techniques primarily from the styles of Judo, Jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do, and Shorin-ryu Karate.

Goals and Philosophy
Our approach to training is twofold; practical self-defense and self-improvement.

Given the dangerous world in which we live, our goal is for our students to be able to defend themselves effectively if ever attacked.  We have comprised what we feel are the best variety of techniques to give our students the tools necessary to control or disable an attacker, should the need ever arise.

Self-improvement is an important part of martial arts training.  Everyone has areas that they wish to see improvement in. For example, a goal may be to lose weight, or for a child to have more discipline.  We wish to help everyone improve as whole and succeed not just in martial arts, but in life.

Our History: Founding of the Style
Shorindokai Karate, as a style, was founded by Hanshi Gary A. Owens. Hanshi, after studying multiple styles for most of his adult life, saw that no one style was good for every situation, and that competition was watering down the truly effective parts of the martial arts.  Working closely with his son, Josh, and with  guidance, encouragement, and mentorship of O'Sensei Phil Porter, then President of the United States Martial Arts Association, Hanshi combined what he felt were the most effective self-defense focused elements of Karate, Judo, Jujitsu and Taekwondo.   Shorindokai Karate is recognized by the World Wide Martial Arts Association (formerly the United States Martial Arts Association) as a separate and legitimate style of Martial Arts.
